1915年(大正4年)富山県八尾町生まれ。1935年(昭和10年)に21歳で和紙づくりの道に入る。直後に民芸運動の祖、柳宗悦の知遇を得て、民芸運動に参加。日本染色文化の碵、上村六郎、芹沢_介に師事。1947年に(株)越中紙社を、1960年に(有)桂樹舎を設立し、八尾に伝わる和紙づくり精神の継承に努める。1985年 八尾町の自宅脇に古い小学校の分校を移築して、和紙の私設博物館「桂樹舎和紙文庫」「桂樹舎民族工芸館」を設立。87歳を超えてなお「坂の町千年会議」の会長として、八尾の町並み保存に尽力を続ける。黄綬褒章、勲5等瑞宝章ほか受賞多数。

Born in Yatsuo, Toyama in 1915, Yoshida
entered the field of Japanese papermaking in 1935 at the age of
21. Soon thereafter he joined the mingei movement with the support
of its founder Soetsu Yanagi and studied under Keisuke Serizawa
and Rokuro Uemura, two cornerstones of the art of Japanese dying.
Founding the paper companies Ecchu Shisha in 1947 and Keijusha in
1960, Yoshida worked to keep the spirit of Yatsuo's traditional
handmade paper alive. In 1985 he had an old elementary school building
dismantled and rebuilt next to his home in Yastsuo, there founding
the private Keijusha Washi Bunko (museum of paper) and Keijusha
Minzoku Kogei-kan (museum of folk handicraft). Even at the age of
87 he continues his tireless efforts to preserve the Yatsuo townscape
as President of the Sakanomachi Sennen Kaigi. Among his many awards,
he has been decorated by the Japanese government with the Medal
of Honor with Yellow Ribbon and the Order of the Sacred Treasure,
Fifth Class.
