1949年(昭和24年)長野市生まれ。1971年 静岡大学人文学部卒業。1996年に中央大学で史学の博士号を取得。長野県立歴史館専門主事を経て、1998年から現職の国立歴史民俗博物館教授。1999年から総合研究大学院大学教授を併任。専門は日本中世史。歴史学研究会、日本史研究会などの各学会に所属。著書に『日本中世の国政と家政』(校倉書房 1995年)、『中世のいくさ祭り・外国との交わり−農村生活史の断面』(校倉書房 1999年)、『展開日本歴史 荘園公領制』(共編者、東京堂出版)など多数。1997年 『博物館研究32-11』で棚橋賞を受賞。

Born in Nagano in 1949, Ihara graduated
from the Department of Humanities at Shizuoka University in 1971
and received a doctorate in history from Chuo University in 1996.
After serving as a director with the Nagano Prefectural Museum of
History, he assumed his current position as an instructor with the
National Museum of Japanese History in 1998. Since 1999 he has also
taught at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies. A specialist
in Japanese medieval history, Ihara is a member of numerous academic
societies such as the Historical Science Society of Japan and the
Japanese Society for Historical Studies. His many publications include
Nihon chusei no kokusei to kasei (Public Policy and Home Economics
in Medieval Japan) [Azekura Shobo, 1995], Chusei no ikusa, matsuri,
gaikoku to no majiwari: noson seikatsushi no danmen (Medieval Battles,
Festivals and Interaction with Foreign Countries: A Cross-Section
of Rural Life History) [Azekura Shobo, 1999] and Tenkai nihon rekishi:
shoen koryo sei (Survey of Japanese History: The System of Public
Lands and Private Estates) [Tokyodo Publishing]. Ihara received
the Tanahashi Award for Hakubutsukan kenkyu (Museum Studies) vol.
32 no. 11 [Japanese Association of Museums, 1997].
