1953年(昭和28年)東京都生まれ。東京大学大学院博士課程を修了し、山梨大学助教授を経て、現在早稲田大学商学部教授。専攻は社会学。特に「複雑性」の理論を極めるべく研究にいそしんでいる。現在は『社会秩序の起源(仮)』という本を執筆中。最近の論文に「複雑性と現代の秩序観」(『文化と社会』掲載)。山梨県武川村に住みながらも、筋金入りの都会派で、早稲田では講義の人気ナンバーワンと評判である。

Born 1953 in Tokyo, Sakurai completed
his doctorate work at the University of Tokyo Graduate School, taught
as an assistant professor at the University of Yamanashi and currently
teaches at the Waseda University School of Commerce. Specializing
in sociology, he is particularly devoted to the study of complexity
theory. He is currently working on a book tentatively titled Shakai
chitsujo no kigen (The Origins of Social Order). Recent papers include
Fukuzatsusei to gendai no chitsujokan (Complexity and Modern Views
of Order) [in Bunka to shakai (Culture and Society)]. Although he
lives in Yamanashi Prefecture's Mukawa Villiage, Sakurai is a staunch
fan of city life and one of Waseda's most popular lecturers.
