1947年(昭和22年)岩手県釜石市生まれ。1975年 早稲田大学卒業。学生時代から小説を書きはじめ、美術館勤務を経て、1983年 『写楽殺人事件』(江戸川乱歩賞)で作家デビュー。その後『総門谷』で吉川英治文学新人賞、『北斎殺人事件』で日本推理作家協会賞、『緋い記憶』で直木賞、『火怨』で吉川英治文学貴と、めざましい活躍を展開する。『炎立つ』『時宗』 はNHK大河ドラマの原作となり、2002年3月には「NHK放送文化賞」を受賞。著書に 『浮世絵鑑賞事典』『広重殺人事件』『歌麿殺人事件』『天を衝く』ほか多数。アレン国際短期大学客員数授。

Born in 1947 in Kamaishi, Iwate, in 1975 Takahashi graduated from Waseda University, where he had begun writing fiction. After working for a while at a museum, in 1983 he published his first book, Sharaku satsujin jiken (The Sharaku Murder), which won the Edogawa Rampo Award. His remarkable career since then includes a Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for New Writers for Somon-dani (Somon Valley), a Mystery Writers Association Award for Hokusai satsujin jiken (The Hokusai Murder), the Naoki Prize for Akai Kioku (Scarlet Memory) and a Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for Literature for Kaen (Burning Resentment). His Homura tatsu (The Fire Still Burns) and Jishu (The Jishu Sect) became the basis for NHK Taiga Dramas and in March 2002 Takahashi received the NHK Broadcasting Culture Prize. Other works include Ukiyo-e kansho jiten (Encyclopedia of Ukiyo-e Appreciation), Hiroshige satsujin jiken (The Hiroshige Murder), Utamaro satsujin jiken (The Utamaro Murder) and Ten wo tsuku (Poking at Heaven). He is also a guest lecturer at Allen International Junior College.
