1945年(昭和20年)日本画家である中島清之の三男として疎開先の長野県小布施町で生まれる。1969年 東京芸術大学日本画科卒業。1971年 同大学院修了。1979年 山種美術館賞展優秀賞受賞。桜や牡丹などみずみずしく華やかな花の作品、社会性、宗教性に富む人物画の大作、装丁画や挿絵など、幅広い活動で知られる現代日本画界の第一人者。1992年 小布施町は中島氏より700点の作品の寄贈を受け、「おぶせミュージアム・中島千波館」をオープン。2000年 東京芸大美術学部デザイン科教授に就任。

Born the third son of nihonga painter
Kiyoshi Nakajima in 1945 in Obuse, where his family had evacuated
during the war, Nakajima graduated from the nihonga department at
Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, completing his
graduate studies at the same university in 1971. In 1979 he received
the Yamadane Art Gallery Exhibition Award for Excellence. One of
the finest contemporary nihonga painters, Nakajima is known for
his broad range, encompassing works portraying fresh, vibrant flowers
such as cherry and peony, large-format portraits rich with social
and religious meaning, as well as book covers and illustrations.
Nakajima donated 700 works to the town of Obuse, which opened the
Obuse Museum and Nakajima Chinami Gallery in 1992. In 2000 Nakajima
began teaching in the Design Department of the school of Fine Arts
at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
