[profile]
Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
in 1954. Received M.A. in Architecture from the University of Tokyo
in 1979. Established the Spatial Design Studio in 1987 after serving
as a visiting scholar at Columbia University's School of Architecture,
Planning and Preservation. Established Kengo Kuma & Associates
in 1990. Currently a professor at Keio University's School of Science
and Technology.
Opposed to the twentieth-century notion that architecture creates
objects divorced from space, Kuma has developed an architectural
mode for the twenty-first century through repeated experimental
integration of architecture and its natural surroundings. At the
same time, he also seeks an open relationship between society and
architecture. A controversialist, he stands at the vanguard of architecture's
next generation.
Kuma has received numerous domestic and international awards for
his work, including:
The JCD Design Award in 1995 for the Kiro-san Observatory
- The Architectural Institute of Japan Award in 1997 for the Noh Stage
in the Forest
- The American Institute of Architects DuPont Benedictus Award in 1997
for Water/Glass
- The Togo Murano Award in 2000 for the Bato-machi Hiroshige Museum
- The Italian International Stone Architecture Award in 2001 for the Nasu
Stone Museum
