1969年 群馬県草津町生まれ。1992年 アルベールビル五輪、1994年のリメハンメル五輪の団体で連続金メダルに輝いた。またワールドカップでも1993、1994、1995年と個人総合3連覇という偉業を成し遂げ、「キング オブ スキー」として海外からも厚く支持された。1998年 長野五輪では日本代表選手団主将として、開会式で選手宣誓を務めた。また双子の弟・次晴氏と一緒に出場したことも記憶に新しい。2002年 ソルトレークシティー五輪では４大会連続出場を果たしたが、納得のいく成績は出せなかった。明るい言動やスター性を持った選手で日本のスポーツ界の顔として活躍。そして2002年5月13日、惜しまれながらも現役を退いた。引退記者会見での「今後の具体的な活動内容やスキーとのかかわり方については」という質問に対して「特別に決まってはいませんが、これから社会勉強をしながら1人の大人として知識を披露する場がありましたら、惜しみなくお役に立ちたいと思っています。」と答えている。

Born in Gunma Prefecture in 1969, Won consecutive Olympic Winter Games gold medals in the Nordic Combined team event in 1992 at Albertville and in 1994 at Lillehammer. With his incredible achievement of winning the overall individual World Cup championship for three consecutive years in 1993, 1994 and 1995, fans around the world came to know him as the King of Ski. At the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, he served as captain of the Japanese delegation and read the athlete's oath at the Opening Ceremony. Many will remember him competing alongside his younger twin brother Tsugiharu. In Salt Lake City, Ogiwara competed in his fourth consecutive Olympic Winter Games but was unable to produce a satisfactory result. As an athlete with optimism and star appeal he is a familiar face in the Japanese sports world. On 13 May 2002 he retired from active competition to the disappointment of many. When, at the press conference announcing his retirement, he was asked exactly what he would do going forward and how he would stay involved with skiing, he replied "Nothing is settled yet, but as I adjust to the real world I'll do everything I can to share what I know as opportunities arise."
