1956年 山梨県生まれ。1980年 多摩美術大学立体デザイン科卒業。セイコーエプソンのデザイナーを経て1989年に米国「IDEO」社の前身である「ID TWO」に入社。1996年に7年半のアメリカ生活を終えて帰国。「IDEO Japan」を設立し、代表者となる。2002年12月にはIDEOフェローとなり独立。東京に「Naoto Fukasawa Design」を設立する。
コンピュータと周辺器機、医療機器、家電製品、家具、空間など幅広いデザインを手がける一方で、企業デザイナーと組んで、人間の無意識をデザインに置き換えるワークショップを開催し続けている。代表的なワークショップは「without thought(考えない)」と名付けられ、国内外のデザイン賞を受賞。その中から生まれた換気扇のようなCDプレイヤーは無印良品から商品化され、2002年にドイツIF金賞を受賞した。
2001年にはニューヨーク近代美術館（MoMA）の招待による同館の企画展「Workspheres」に作品「Personal Skies」を出展。国内では「行為に相即するデザイン」展や、日本デザインコミッティー50周年記念展「デザインの原形」展をコミッショナーとして企画、デザイン、出版した。現在、多摩美術大学生産デザイン科講師、「Tokyo AAD Studio」デレクター、「良品計画」デザインアドバイザリーボードメンバーも務める。

Born 1956 in Yamanashi Prefecture. Graduated from Tama Art University with a degree in three-dimensional design in 1980. After working as a designer for Seiko Epson, Fukasawa joined America's ID TWO, the predecessor to IDEO, in 1989. After seven-and-a-half years in the United States he returned to Japan in 1996 to establish IDEO Japan. In December 2002 he became an IDEO Fellow and opened his own office in Tokyo: Naoto Fukasawa Design.
Fukasawa's design projects span a broad range including computers and peripherals, consumer electronics and household appliances, medical equipment, furniture and physical space. He also teams up with corporate designers to host workshops that embody people's unconscious thoughts and behavior in design. His signature workshop series, "Without Thought," has produced numerous domestic and international award-winners. Notable among them is the ventilation fan-style CD player brought to market by MUJI, which earned Germany's iF Gold Award in 2002.
Fukasawa was invited to the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 2001 to participate in an exhibition called "Workspheres" where he displayed "Personal Skies." Domestically, he has also undertaken planning, design and publishing projects for the "Design Dissolving in Behavior" exhibition and served as Commissioner for the "Optimum" exhibition commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Japan Design Committee.
Fukasawa serves as a member of the Tama Art University Product Design faculty, a Director of Tokyo AAD Studio and a member of the Ryohin Keikaku Design Advisory Board
