Born in 1930 in what used to be Shimizu City in Shizuoka Prefecture,
Takeuchi graduated from the Tokyo University Faculty of Economics
in 1954 and joined the Long Term Credit Bank of Japan (LTCB). Takeuchi
has been devoted to research since 1956 when he was assigned to
the LTCB Research Department. He retired from LTCB in 1989 after
serving as Managing Director. He later served as Director of the
LCTB Research Institute before establishing the Takeuchi Economic
Workshop in 1998. During this time he also held concurrent lectureships
at institutions such as Tokyo University, Gakushuin University,
Musashi University and Hosei University. Takeuchi has also served
as an NHK newscaster on programs such as Business Network, Economics
for 100 Million and Business Satellite.
Takeuchi's numerous books include The Wisdom of History - Hints
from Economics (1994; PHP Institute), Back Street Economics (1980;
Nihon Keizai Shimbun), What Brought Down the LTCB? (2001; PHP Institute)
and The Economics of the Splinter-Pulling Jizo (2001; Media Factory).
Even from his vantage point in the mainstream during Japan's period
of rapid economic growth, the Takeuchi style of analyzing consumer
behavior and trends with a man-on-the-street approach has been well-received
by the mass media as well as in the world of economics.
Currently, in addition to heading up the Takeuchi Economics Workshop,
Takeuchi serves as Director of the Shizuoka Research Institute,
a professor at the Shizuoka University of Art and Culture, and an
editorial writer for the Shizuoka Newspaper among other activities
centered on his Shizuoka birthplace. Takeuchi promotes the former
Shimizu City as Chairman of The Venerable Jirocho Society and is
involved in numerous regional revitalization projects such as the
Hakuba Village Fireside Sessions in Nagano Prefecture and Yasuzuka
Town's Snowman Foundation in Niigata Prefecture.
