1951年、兵庫県生まれ。国際基督教大学教養学部卒業。80年、同大学院博士後期課程単位取得後に退学。新潟大学教育学部、メディア教育開発センターを経て、99年に東京大学大学院・新領域創成科学研究科助教授に就任。メディア論を専攻し、コンテンツ制作の研究開発に従事する。
おもな著書として『表現のビジネス（2003年 東京大学出版会）』『極端に短いインターネットの歴史（1997年晶文社）』『メディアの世紀（1991年岩波書店』『デジタル革命の衝撃（1996年ペンローグ）』『マルチメディア・マインド（1993年ビーエヌエヌ）』『ハイパーメディア・ギャラクシー（1988年福武書店）』『コンピューターの終焉（1989年福武書店）』『イデオロギーとしてのメディア（1992年福武書店』『キューブリック・ミステリー（1990年福武書店）』などがある。
黒澤明文化振興財団理事、徳間記念アニメーション文化財団評議委員、（財）ハイパーネットワーク社会研究所顧問、総務省ＡＭＤアワード審査委員長、経済産業省・デジタルコンテンツグランプリ審査委員、経済産業省・日本映画テレビ技術大賞審査委員、文化庁メディア芸術祭審査委員、第14回東京国際映画祭国際審査委員デジタルコンテンツ白書編集委員会委員長など、多方面で活動している。

Born 1951 in Hyogo Prefecture. A graduate of the College of Liberal Arts at International Christian University (ICU), he left ICU in 1980 after completing post-doctoral work there. After working at the Faculty of Education at Niigata University and the National Institute of Multimedia Education, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences at the University of Tokyo. Specializing in media studies, he is also involved with research and development of content production.
