1946年、長野県茅野市生まれ。71年、東北大学工学部建築学科卒業。78年、東京大学大学院工学系研究科博士課程修了。98年、東京大学生産技術研究所教授。
学位論文「明治期における都市計画の歴史的研究」で、日本都市計画学会賞論文奨励賞を受賞。著書『明治の東京計画』(岩波書店、82年)で、毎日出版文化賞。『建築探偵の冒険東京篇』(筑摩書房、86年)で、サントリー学芸賞。「東京建築探偵団・路上観察学会研究調査活動」により、日本文化デザイン賞。「日本近代の建築・都市の研究」に関する一連の論文で日本建築学会賞を受賞するなど、多彩でユニークは著作・研究活動は専門分野以外の人々にも幅広く知られ、多くのファンを持つ。
91年には故郷の茅野市に「神長官守矢資料館」を設計し、"建築史家"に"建築家"の活動も加わる。「赤瀬川原平氏邸(ニラ・ハウス)」で日本芸術大賞(97年)、「熊本県立農業大学校学生寮」で日本建築学会作品賞(2001年)も受賞。主な建築作品に自邸「タンポポハウス」(東京都国分寺市)、「一本松ハウス」(福岡市)、「秋野不矩美術館」(静岡県天竜市)などがある。

Born in Chino, Nagano in 1946, Fujimori
graduated from the department of architecture at Tohoku University's
school of engineering in 1971 and completed the doctoral course
in architecture at the University of Tokyo in 1978. He became a
Professor at University of Tokyo Institute of Industrial Science
Doctor of Engineering in 1998.
Fujimori's dissertation, Meijiki ni okeru toshi keikaku no rekishiteki
kenkyu (The History of Urban Planning During the Meiji Period),
won the City Planning Institute of Japan Prize. Other awards he
has received include:
* The Mainichi Publication Culture Award for Meiji no tokyo keikaku
(Meiji Plans for Tokyo), published by Iwanami Shoten in 1982.
* The Suntory Prize for Social Science and Humanities for Kenchiku
tantei no boken: tokyo hen (Adventures of an Architectural Detective:
Tokyo), published by Chikuma Shobo in 1986.
* The Japan Inter-Design Forum Award for his research activities
with the Tokyo Architectural Detective Agency and the Roadway Observation
Society.
* The Architectural Institute of Japan Prize for his series of writings
on contemporary Japanese architecture and cities.
Fujimori's colorful, offbeat writings and research have earned him
many fans and broad popularity even outside his field.
In 1991, Fujimori became not only an architectural historian but
an architect as well when he designed the Jinchokan Moriya Historical
Museum in his hometown of Chino City, Nagano. He was awarded the
Japan Art Grand Prix in 1997 for Leek House, which he designed for
avant-garde artist Genpei Akasegawa, and received the 2001 Architectural
Institute of Japan Prize for Design for the dormitory he designed
for Kumamoto Agricultural College. Fujimori's other architectural
achievements include his own home, know as Dandelion House (Kokubunji
City, Tokyo), Solitary Pine House (Fukuoka City) and the Akino Fuku
Museum (Tenryu City, Shizuoka).
