1939年 兵庫県西宮市甲子園生まれ。桑沢デザイン研究所修了後、（株）凸版印刷入社。1962年にフリーランスのカメラマンとなり、主に建築、美術など造形的な写真を取り続ける。同時に、日本各地の新旧が入り混じった村、町、都市の風景を撮影する。1974年 「現代日本15人の写真家展」（国立近代美術館）を初めとして、多数の展覧会や個展に出展。その写真は高い評価を得ていたが、1982年に職業写真家に「終止符宣言」をして、兵庫県淡路島の瓦生産地、津井で粘土瓦の製造に従事する。2年後に「フリーカワラマン」となり、「山田脩二・淡路かわら房」を設立。
1991年 「吉田五十八特別賞」。2000年 「山田脩二のかわらの使い方」で「グッドデザイン中小企業庁長官特別賞」。2002年 「井植文化賞」。2003年 日本文化フォーラムの「日本文化デザイン大賞」。
主な著書に「山田脩二・日本村1969〜79」（81年三省堂）、「カメラマンからカワラマンへ」（96年、筑摩書房）、「日本の写真家第39巻山田脩二」（98年、岩波書店）、「瓦歴史とデザイン」（小林章男と共著、01年、淡交社）など。

Born in the Koshien area of Nishinomiya City, Hyogo in 1939, Yamada joined Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. after completing his Studies at the Kuwasawa Design School. Since 1962 he has worked as a freelance cameraman focusing on formal subjects such as architecture and art as well as the mixed landscapes of old and new in Japan's villages, towns and cities. His work has been shown in numerous group and individual exhibitions beginning with "15 Contemporary Japanese Photographers" at the National Museum of Modern Art in 1974. Although his work was well received, in 1982 he declared himself through with photography as an occupation and began pursuing the manufacture of ceramic kawara roof tiles in the kawara-producing area of Tsui on Hyogo Prefecture's Awaji Island. Two years later he established the Yamada Shuji Awaji Kawara Workshop and redefined himself as a "freelance kawaraman."
