1956年 兵庫県神戸市生まれ。東京大学工学部都市工学科卒業、同大学院経済学研究科博士課程修了。現在、同大学院総合文化研究科教授。専攻は社会経済学、相関社会科学。「豊かさ」について、近代の経済社会の変容とのかかわりから分析している。
1980年代後半にはフリー・ジャズのコンサートの作成にかかわる。1988年8月 ジャズ祭「真夏の夜のジャズ」開催。出演はのなか悟空「人間国宝」、「フェダイン」、早坂紗知＋永田利樹、姜泰煥（この公演のため初の単独来日）、沖至、副島輝人など。一部で高い評価を得る。のなか悟空「人間国宝」のＣＤ「Jolly」（ナツメグ）製作。1990年頃からマスメディアで言論活動を始める。「宝島30」、「This is 読 売」などで論争時評を連載し、1997年からは朝日新聞夕刊で2年間「ウォッチ論潮」を担当。同じ頃から格闘空手（立ち技系総合格闘技）を始める（90年4月入門）。動機としては、ジャズマンと同じ表現を別の形で実現できると感じたから。しかし実際に始めてみると、格闘技は社会の現実を読み解くための格好の素材だと気づいた。現在、空手道大道塾3段。同塾ビジネスマンクラス師範代。
著書に「豊かさの文化経済学」、「格闘技としての同時代論争」、「さまよえる理想主義」、「皆殺しブックレビュー」（佐藤亜紀・福田和也との共著）「自由の条件」「消費資本主義のゆくえ」「経済思想」「「消費不況」の謎を解く」「失われた景観」「長期不況論」などがある。
主な授賞1959年（昭和34年）毎日出版文化賞（「日本の民家」全10巻により）、1964年（昭和39年）ジャパン・アートディレクターズ・クラブ賞（『日本のかたち』により）、1975年（昭和50年）アメリカ建築家協会（AIA）賞、1979年（昭和54年）毎日デザイン賞、1984年（昭和59年）芸術選奨文部大臣賞、1985年（昭和60年）国際建築家連合（UIA)賞、1989年（平成1年）フランス建築アカデミー賞、1997年（平成9年）紫綬褒章日本建築学会文化賞

Born in Kobe in 1956. After graduating from the Department of Urban Engineering at the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Engineering, Matsubara completed his doctorate at the same university's Graduate School of Economics. Currently he teaches at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, where he specializes in socioeconomics and comparative sociology. He focuses on the intellectual history of liberty by examining its effect on the transformation of modern economies.
In the late 1980s, Matsubara became involved in producing free jazz concerts, including A Midsummer Night's Jazz in August 1988. With appearances by Nonaka Goku & Ningenkokuho, Fedayien, Sachi Hayasaka and Tochiki Nagata, Kang Tae Huan (in his Japan debut), Itaru Oki and Teruto Soejima, the concert was a minor hit. Matsubara also produced Jolly, Nonaka Goku & Ningenkokuho's first CD.
Beginning around 1990 he began writing for the mass media, producing regular commentary for publications such as Takarajima 30 and This is Yomiuri. For two years beginning in 1997 he was responsible for the Watch Roncho column in the evening Asahi Shimbun newspaper.
Around the same time, in April 1990, he began practicing combat karate (a comprehensive, standing martial art), hoping to express a jazz-like sensibility through a completely different medium. Having begun, however, he realized that martial arts were an excellent tool for reading social truth. Matsubara currently ranks at the third level at the Daidojuku Karate School, where he also serves as an instructor of classes for businessmen.
