1945年10月8日東京都杉並区に、画家玉村方久斗の末子として生まれる。都立西高を経て、1971年 東京大学仏文科を卒業。在学中にパリ大学言語学研究所に2年間留学。通訳、翻訳業をへて、文筆業へ。1977年に「パリ旅の雑学ノート」、1980年に「料理の四面体」を刊行してエッセイトストとしての地歩を築く。旅と都市、料理、食文化、田舎暮らし、ライフスタイル論など幅広い分野で執筆を続ける。1983年より8年間、軽井沢町で生活。その後、病を得たのを機に高校以来中断していた絵画制作を87年より再開し、1989年 長野県上田市の「原画廊」で初個展。1994年以後は椿山荘フォーシーズンズ・ホテル東京の「ガレリア・プロバ」を本拠として、毎年数回の個展および各地での巡回展を開催している。1991年より長野県小県郡東部町在住。東部町ではワイン用ブドウ、ハーブ、西洋野菜を栽培する農園ヴィラデストガーデンファームアンドワイナリーを経営。2004年4月に自園自醸のワイナリーのほか、カフェ、ショップをオープンする。著書は「食の地平線」「グルメの食法」「アルマジロ私想録」「種まく人」「エッセイスト」「田園の快楽」「とっておきパリ左岸ガイド」「回転スシ世界一周」「田園の快楽−それから?」「玉村豊男モバイル日記」「ワインの時間」など。画集に「玉村豊男パリ風景画集」「FLOWERS」「HARVEST」「ヴィラデスト菜時記−暮らしの輪郭線」(毎日新聞社)、「考える人」(新潮社)など。

Tamamura was born in Suginami-ku, Tokyo on 8 October 1945, the youngest son of painter Hokuto Tamamura. After attending the municipal Nishi High School, he graduated from the department of French Literature at the University of Tokyo in 1971. He spent two of his university years studying at the University of Parisユ Linguistics Research Center. After interpreting and translating, he turned his attention to a career in writing.
Tamamura established himself as an essayist with the publication of Pari, tabi no zatsugaku noto (Paris: A Travel Notebook) in 1977 and Ryori no shimentai (The Pyramid of Cooking) in 1980 and continues to write on a broad range of subjects including travel, cities, cuisine, rural living and lifestyle theory. He lived in Karuizawa for eight years beginning in 1983.
In 1987, an illness offered Tamamura the opportunity to resume painting, which he had abandoned in high school, and he held his first solo exhibition in 1989 at the Hara Gallery in Ueno City, Nagano. Since 1994, he has used Galleria Prova at the Four Seasons Hotel (Tokyo at Chinzan-so) as a base, holding numerous solo and traveling exhibitions every year. Since 1991 he has lived in Tobu Town, Nagano managing the Villa dユEst Gardenfarm and Winery, which produces wine grapes, herbs, and western vegetables. In April 2004 he opened his own winery, caf・and shop.
