Together with local forest expert Mr.
Matsumoto, Nicol founded what is now known as the C.W. Nicol Afan
Woodland Trust in 2001 as a project to restore the forest. Born
in 1940 in Wales, at the age of 17 Nicol went to Canada where he
later took part in marine mammal research as a technical officer
at the Arctic Biological Station of the Fisheries Research Board
of Canada. In 1967 he began a two-year stint as game warden for
the Ethiopian government's wildlife conservation department, establishing
the Simien National Park and serving as its director. In 1972 he
began work as a technical officer for the Freshwater Institute of
the Fisheries Research Board of Canada and, as a member of the Department
of the Environment's environmental emergency response team, dealt
with accidents such as oil and chemical spills. Nicol moved to Nagano
Prefecture's Kurohime area in 1980 and pursued his writing efforts.
He obtained Japanese citizenship in 1995. Having purchased neglected
woodland and worked over the course of 16 years to revitalize its
ecosystem, Nicol founded the C.W. Nicol Afan Woodland Trust in 2002.
His numerous publications include Tikishi (The White Shaman) [Kadokawa
Shoten], Isana (Harpoon) [Bungei Shunju-sha], Kaze wo mita shonen
(The Boy Who Saw the Wind) [Kodansha], Meiyaku (The Alliance) [Bungei
Shunju], Soteki kaiiki (When Two Strong Men) [Bungei Shunju], Hadaka
