1937年 神奈川県鎌倉市に生まれる。1962年 東京大学医学部卒業。一年のインターンを経て、解剖学教室に入る。以後、解剖学を専攻。1967年医学博士号を修得。
1981年 東京大学医学部教授に就任。東京大学総合資料館長、東京大学出版会理事長を兼任。1995年 東京大学を退官。1996年
北里大学教授に就任(大学院医療人間科学)、大正大学客員教授を兼任(人間学原論)。1988年 「からだの見方」(筑摩書房)でサントリー学芸賞を受賞。2002年
「バカの壁」(新潮社)で毎日出版文化賞を受賞。

Born in 1937 in Kamakura, Kagagawa,
Yoro graduated from the University of Tokyo School of Medicine in
1962 and then entered its anatomy laboratory after a year-long internship.
Majoring in anatomy, he earned his doctorate medicine in 1967. In
1981 he began to teach in the University of Tokyo School of Medicine,
serving also as Director of the University Museum and University
Press. Yoro left the University of Tokyo in 1995 and in 1996 became
a professor of medical sociology at the Kitasato University Graduate
School of Medical Science and a guest lecturer in principles of
anthropology at Taisho University. In 1988 he received the Suntory
Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities for Karada no mikata (A
Way of Looking at the Body) [Chikuma Shobo] and in 2002 received
the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award for Baka no kabe (Wall of
Fools) [Shincho-sha]. Other significant publications include Kaibogaku
