1946年 長野県須坂市生まれ。１969年 信州大学工学部電気工学科卒業。1971年 信州大学大学院工学研究科修士課程。1972年 日立製作所を経て信州大学助手。1978年 信州大学工学部助教授。1990年 信州大学工学部教授。1993年4月-1995年3月 地域共同研究センター長。2003年 MEFS株式会社CTO（大学発ベンチャー）カーボン科学研究所所長。2005年 信州大学学長補佐兼務。
表彰等：1995年 炭素材料学会賞受賞（炭素材料学会）をはじめ、2004年 American Carbon Society Medal、北京化工大学名誉教授（中国）、2005年 文部科学大臣賞（知的クラスター創成事業：「長野・上田スマートデバイスクラスター」（産学官連携活動の推進及び科学技術の振興に取り組み他の模範となる大きな成果を挙げ科学技術創造立国実現に向けた功績）など多数表彰。
専門分野はナノカーボン等、新炭素体の科学と応用について研究。

1971 Awarded a masters degree from the Shinshu University Graduate School of Engineering.
1972 After working at Hitachi, Ltd., became an assistant at Shinshu University.
1978 Assistant professor at Shinshu University School of Engineering.
1990 Full professor at Shinshu University School of Engineering.
1993-1995 Director, Shinshu University Cooperative Research Center.
2003 Chief Technology Officer of MEFS Co, Ltd. (university start-up). Director of the Shinshu University Institute of Carbon Science and Technology.
2005 Advisor to the President of Shinshu University

Awards received include the 1995 Carbon Society Prize from the Carbon Society of Japan, the 2004 American Carbon Society Medal, an honorary professorship at the Beijing University of Chemical Technology in China and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Prize for his efforts with the Nagano-Ueda Smart Device Cluster, an Intellectual Cluster project, to promote coordination between industry, academia and government and advance science and technology, achieving model results and contributing to the realization of a nation of technological and scientific creativity. His research focus is the science and application of nanocarbons and other new carbons.
