1962年 東京生まれ。東京大学理学部、法学部卒業後、東京大学大学院理学系研究科物理学専攻課程修了。理学博士。理化学研究所、ケンブリッジ大学を経て現職。主な著書に「脳とクオリア」(日経サイエンス社)、「生きて死ぬ私」(徳間書店)、「心を生みだす脳のシステム」 (NHK出版)、「意識とはなにか--<私>を生成する脳」(ちくま新書)、「脳内現象」(NHK出版)、「脳と仮想」(新潮社)、「脳と創造性」(PHP研究所)、「スルメを見てイカがわかるか!」(角川書店、養老孟司氏との共著)、「脳の中の小さな神々」(柏書房、歌田明宏氏との共著)、「「脳」整理法」(ちくま新書)、「クオリア降臨」(文藝春秋)、「脳の中の人生」(中央公論新社)、「The Future of Learning」(共著)、「Understanding Representation」(共著)がある。専門は脳科学、認知科学。「クオリア」(感覚の持つ質感)をキーワードとして脳と心の関係を研究するとともに、文芸評論、美術評論にも取り組んでいる。出井伸之氏の提唱するソニーのQUALIAプロジェクト・コンセプターとしての活動も行っている。「脳と仮想」で、第四回小林秀雄賞を受賞。NHK「プロフェッショナル 仕事の流儀」キャスター。
ソニーコンピュータサイエンス研究所シニアリサーチャー、東京工業大学大学院客員助教授(脳科学、認知科学)、東京芸術大学非常勤講師(美術解剖学)。その他、東京大学、大阪大学、早稲田大学、聖心女子大学などの非常勤講師もつとめる。

Born in Tokyo in 1962. After graduating from the University of Tokyo faculties of science and law, Mogi earned his doctorate from the University of Tokyo’s graduate school of physics. He assumed his current position as a senior researcher at the Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. following time at RIKEN and at Cambridge University. A specialist in brain science and cognitive science, Mogi’s research focuses on the relationship between the brain and the mind, and particularly on qualia (the subjective qualities of perception). He also engages in literary and art criticism. Mogi is a guest assistant professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (brain science and cognitive science) and an adjunct professor at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (Artistic Anatomy), as well as an adjunct professor at institutions such as the University of Tokyo, Osaka University, Waseda University and the University of the Sacred Heart, Tokyo. He is active in promoting the concept of the Qualia Project championed by Sony’s Nobuyuki Idei. He also serves as a host on the NHK television program Purofesshonaru shigoto no ryugi (Professional: Ways of Work).
