1944年4月8日京都生まれ。1969年東京農業大学農学部卒業、1987年東京農業大学教授、1993年総合研究所所長、1995年農学部長、1998年地域環境科学部長、1999年より2005年7月まで学長。これまでに、（社）日本造園学会長、（社）日本都市計画学会長、東南アジア国際農学会長、日本環境教育学会運営委員、政府の観光政策審議会、北海道開発審議会、都市計画中央審議会、道路審議会、河川審議会、中央防災会議などの専門委員、国土審議会特別委員、国土交通省社会資本整備審議会臨時委員、東京都景観審議会副会長、朝日新聞社森林文化賞委員会委員、毎日新聞社持続可能社会創造委員会委員などを歴任。

Born in Tokyo on April 8th, 1944. Graduated from Tokyo University of Agriculture School of Agriculture in 1969, became a professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture in 1987, became General Research Head in 1993, became head of the School of Agriculture in 1995, became head of the School of Environmental Science in 1997, was President from 1999 to July of 2005. Previously, he was chairman for the Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, chairman for the City Planning Institute of Japan, chairman for the International Society of Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences, committee member for the Japanese Society of Environmental Education, Tourism Policy Deliberation Committee, Hokkaido Developmental Deliberation Committee, Central City Planning Deliberation Committee, Road Deliberation Committee, River Deliberation Committee, specialized member for the Central Disaster Prevention Committee, special member on the Land Deliberation Committee, temporary member of the Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transportation Society Capital Maintenance Deliberation Committee, assistant chairman of the Tokyo City Scenery Deliberation Committee, member of the Asahi Shimbun Moribayashi Culture Award Committee, member of the Mainichi Shimbun Sustainable Society Creation Committee, and so on.
