[プロフィール]
1952 年横浜生まれ。近世文学（江戸時代の文学）を専攻するが、その後、研究範囲は江戸時代の美術、生活文化、海外貿易、経済、音曲、「連」の働きなどに拡がってゆく。さらに、中国文学を中心に東アジアと江戸の交流・比較研究、布や生活文化を中心にインド・東南アジアと江戸の交流・比較研究などにおよんでいる。江戸時代の価値観から見た現代社会の問題に言及することも多い。2005年に紫綬褒章。

Born in Yokohama in 1952. Majored in Modern Literature (Edo period), but later expanded her field of study to include art, lifestyles, foreign trade, economics, music, and group movements of the Edo period. Also she performed comparative research on exchanges between Edo and East Asia centered on Chinese literature, and the exchange of cloth and lifestyles between Edo and India and Southeast Asia. She also often references modern societal problems from the viewpoint of the Edo period. Received the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2005.
