1936年、徳島県に生まれる。
早稲田大学大学院博士課程修了(美術史)。
1968年より1970年まで、チェコ(旧チェコスロバキア)政府招聘留学生としてプラハのカレル大学大学院に学ぶ。
ガラス工芸史、東西美術交渉史専攻。
多摩美大、早大、岩手大、日本女子大などいろいろな大学で教鞭をとった後、1981年、ガラス作家養成校・東京ガラス工芸研究所、能登島ガラス工房などを開設。
現職:国立台湾芸術大学客員教授、箱根ガラスの森美術館顧問。
著書に「ガラスの道」(中公文庫)、「図説西洋陶磁史」(ブレーン出版)、「アール・ヌーヴォーのガラス」(淡交社)、「トンボ玉」(平凡社)、「世界ガラス美術全集」(求龍堂)、「ローマ文化王国・新羅」(新潮社)、「天皇のものさし」(麗澤大学出版会)、など多数。
中国語版「鏡子的魔術」「香水瓶」(ともに上海書店出版社)、韓国語版「ローマ文化王国−新羅」(ソウル、シアトル出版社)。

Born in Tokushima Prefecture in 1936. Earned a Ph.D. in Art History from Waseda University Graduate School. Studied at Charles University in Prague, in the Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia) as a government-invited foreign student from 1968 to 1970. After teaching at various universities such as Tama Art University, Waseda University, Iwate University and Japan Women's University, in 1981 he opened facilities such as the glass craft training school - Tokyo Glass Art Institute and Notojima Glass Studio. Currently he works as a visiting professor at the National Taiwan University of Arts and an advisor for the Venetian Glass Museum in Hakone.
Publications include "The Way of Glass" (Chuko Bunko), "An Illustrated History of Western Ceramics" (Brain Shuppan), "Art Nouveau Glass" (Tankosha), "Glass Beads" (Heibonsha), "Complete Collection of World Glass Art" (Kyuryudo), "Kingdom of Roman Culture - Silla" (Shinchosha), "The Emperor's Ruler" (Reitaku University Press). He has published Chinese versions of "Mirror-like Sorcery" and "Perfume Bottle" (both Shanghai Academic Bookstore). He has published a Korean version of "Kingdom of Roman Culture - Silla" (Seoul, Seattle Publishers).
