1952年、福岡市生まれ。 東京大学都市工学科卒、同大学院修了。 明治大学助手、東京大学助教授を経て、1996年より東京大学教授。 この間アジア工科大学助教授（バンコク）、MIT客員研究員、コロンビア大学客員研究員、フランス国立社会科学高等研究院客員教授などを歴任。 専門は都市計画、都市保全計画、都市景観計画、市民主体のまちづくり論など。 工学博士。

[Profile]
Born in the city of Fukuoka in 1952. Graduated from the Tokyo University Department of Urban Engineering and completed graduate study at the same university. Worked as an assistant at Meiji University and an assistant professor at Tokyo University, then as a professor at Tokyo University from 1996. During that time he held such positions as assistant professor at the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, visiting researcher at MIT and Columbia University, and visiting professor at the French School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS). His specialties are in city planning, urban maintenance planning, cityscape planning, citizen-based town design and so on. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering.
