1941年京城市(現ソウル)生まれ、父親の郷里の長野県下諏訪町で育つ。1965年東京大学工学部建築学科卒業。71年アーバンロボット設立。79年伊東豊雄建築設計事務所に改称。主な作品に「下諏訪町立諏訪湖博物館」、「せんだいメディアテーク」、「まつもと市民芸術館」、「TOD’S表参道ビル」、「瞑想の森 市営斎場」、「多摩美術大学図書館(八王子キャンパス)」、「座・高円寺」、「2009高雄ワールドゲームズメインスタジアム」などがある。日本建築学会賞、芸術選奨文部大臣賞、日本芸術院賞、ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ「金獅子賞」、金のコンパス賞(Compasso d’Oro ADI)、王立英国建築家協会(RIBA)ロイヤルゴールドメダル、2009年度朝日賞など受賞。現在、「今治市伊東豊雄建築ミュージアム」、「バルセロナ見本市 グランヴィア会場拡張計画(スペイン)」、「台中メトロポリタンオペラハウス(台湾)」などのプロジェクトが進行中。

Born in 1941 in Gyeongseong (now Seoul) and raised in his father's birthplace of Shimosuwa, Nagano prefecture. Graduated from the University of Tokyo School of Engineering's Department of Architecture in 1965. Founded Urban Robot in 1971. In 1979 he changed the name to Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects. His major works include the "Shimosuwa Town Lake Suwa Museum," "Sendai Mediatheque," "Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre," "TOD'S Omotesando Building," "Forest of Meditation - Municipal Funeral Hall," "Tama Art University Library (Hachioji Campus)," "Za-Koenji Public Theatre" and "2009 Takao World Games Main Stadium." Has received awards including the Architectural Institute of Japan Award, the Ministry of Education Award, the Japan Art Academy Award, the Venice Biannale "Golden Lion Award," the ADI Compasso d'Oro Award, the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the 2009 Asahi Prize. He is currently working on several projects including the "Imabari City Toyo Ito Architectural Museum," "Barcelona Trade Fair Granvia Expansion Plan (Spain)" and the "Taichung Metropolitan Opera House (Taiwan)."
