1951年 静岡県生まれ。 1974年 東京大学経済学部経済学科卒業。 1978年 米国ロチェスター大学大学院経済学研究科博士課程修了。 1978年 米国ヒューストン大学経済学部助教授(1979年6月まで)。 1979年 米国ロチェスター大学経済学博士号(Ph.Ｄ.)取得。 1979年 東京都立大学経済学部助教授。 1982年 東京大学経済学部助教授。 1993年 同 教授。 1996年 同 大学院経済学研究科教授。 2006年 総合研究開発機（ＮＩＲＡ理事長。 2007年 東京大学大学院経済学研究科長・経済学部長。

Born in 1951 in Shizuoka prefecture. Graduated in economics from the Tokyo University School of Economics in 1974. In 1978 he completed a doctorate course at the University of Rochester School of Economics in the United States. In 1978 he began working as an assistant professor in the University of Houston School of Economics in the United States (until June of 1979). In 1979 he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Rochester School of Economics in the United States. Became an assistant professor in the Tokyo Metropolitan University School of Economics in 1979. Became an assistant professor in the Tokyo University School of Economics in 1982. Became a professor at the same university in 1993. Became a professor of the graduate school of Economics at the same university in 1996. Became the chairman of NIRA (National Institute for Research Advancement) in 2006. Became head of the graduate School of Economics at Tokyo University in 2007.
